Using Monarda Essential Oil for Headache Relief

Posted on: 12 February 2021

Many headaches are related to stress and tension. As such, they can often be treated and managed with essential oils known to ease stress and tension. One such essential oil is Monarda essential oil. You can find it in most health food stores and also in more specialized oil shops. Here's a closer look at Monarda essential oil and how to use it for headache relief.

What Is Monarda?

Monarda is probably not a plant you've heard of before, which may make you a little apprehensive about using this essential oil. But have you heard of bee balm, the purple-flowered plant that thrives in wooded areas? That's the same thing. Monarda is just the proper name for bee balm. This plant lives throughout North America, and it has long been known for its therapeutic qualities. More recently, people have realized those therapeutic qualities come from its essential oils, and so they have been isolating and bottling those essential oils.

What Are the Benefits of Monarda Essential Oil?

Monarda essential oil seemingly works in two ways. It reduces inflammation and feelings of stress. Since stress and inflammation are at the heart of many diseases, this means Monarda essential oil is good for managing a wide range of conditions, including acne, neck pain, and back pain.

Headaches are very often tied to stress, which causes you to carry tension in your back and neck, and that tension leads to inflammation in the back and neck. Once that tension works its way up to the base of your skull, you end up with a headache. Monarda essential oil breaks this cycle by alleviating both the stress and the inflammation.

How Do You Use Monarda Essential Oil for Headaches?

There are a few different methods you can try. Some people like diluting Monarda essential oil with a carrier oil, like almond oil, and then applying the mixture directly to the forehead and the base of the skull. You should get relief within minutes.

If you do not like the idea of getting your head all oily, then you can instead use Monarda essential oil for aromatherapy. Put a few drops in a diffuser, fill it up with water, and turn it on. Your room will be filled with a scent that reminds you of citrus, which will help your headache fade away.

Headaches can be a real pain, but Monarda essential oil is a natural and approachable option for managing them.
